CNN ‘investigates,’ doctors, lies about contacting Dr. Mercola

In a series of errors that spark questions about CNN’s journalistic ethics, the media giant raced to correct its deceitful reportage October 20, 2021, on Dr. Mercola and his alleged refusal to respond to reporters before the story came out.

The only thing is, Dr. Mercola DID respond to CNN reporters. They just chose not to tell readers and viewers that it didn’t happen until after Mercola contacted them, inquiring as to why they had NOT been contacted. And then, when they did correct their story, they only added a line at the end saying, “This story has been updated to note that Dr. Mercola previously responded to CNN’s request for comment.”

That’s not exactly how it all went down, though. CNN’s first article read, “CNN has reached out to all of them. Only Buttar agreed to comment.” That was a lie in that CNN never contacted Dr. Mercola at all. What really happened was the Mercola team contacted one of the reporters, Robert Kuznia, asking him to show the team evidence that they’d contacted Mercola.

“Thank you for the email,” Kuznia responded. “Would you like to provide a response and we can update the story?” The Mercola team replied, “CNN lied when stating they gave us an opportunity to respond when this article was published. That is a complete fabrication, and we hope CNN won’t spread misinformation in the future.”

So what did Kuznia and CNN do? They “fixed” their “error” with more lies, first that Mercola had “previously responded” and that the article had been updated to reflect that, and second that CNN had approached Mercola “for recent stories,” and that “Mercola later sent a statement.” They then added a statement Mercola gave them in August.

But this is October and the lie is the blatant attempt to hide the first lie from the public by making the story sound like they’d contacted Mercola and he’d belatedly answered them. In other words, instead of admitting they hadn’t contacted Mercola at all for their more recent story, they created a time-fabrication that avoided having to admit their lie.

For a media outlet that touts its “accountable journalism” and “journalistic integrity,” CNN has more than strayed from its own code of ethics, which includes the Associated Press Managing Editors’ code, which says first and foremost: “A good newspaper is fair, accurate, honest, responsible, independent and decent. Truth is its guiding principle.”

In this instance, CNN was neither fair nor accurate nor honest nor responsible nor decent, not to mention they forgot that “truth is its guiding principle.”
